The BUT (formerly the DUT, which became the BUT after the 2021 reform) Multimedia and Internet Professions (MMI) is a short, 3-year post-baccalaureate university programme prepared within an IUT (university institute of technology), very often after obtaining a general baccalaureate. What careers does this programme lead to? Is it possible to continue your studies after a BUT?
This BUT MMI trains students in every stage from the design to the development of multimedia products, with a technical component in IT and multimedia across all possible communication media. This diploma allows graduates to work in various sectors: marketing, cultural, communication, audiovisual, and more.
After these three years of training at an IUT, the student has several options:
- Continue their studies;
- Move towards working life.
What is a BUT in multimedia and internet professions?
Since the start of the 2021 academic year, the DUT has become a BUT (Bachelor's University of Technology degree), thus allowing students to obtain a bachelor's-level qualification at the end of their studies (find out more about the differences between the DUT and the BUT).
This BUT MMI (Bachelor's University of Technology in multimedia and internet professions) prepares students over 3 years after the baccalaureate for a level-6 university diploma in the RNCP (French National Directory of Professional Certifications). It trains them in every stage from the design to the development of multimedia products. Choosing a BUT MMI means choosing to work in the digital field and opting for a university diploma.
What are the career prospects of the BUT in multimedia, internet and communication?
If you have obtained your BUT MMI, you can continue your studies with a Master's degree to gain expertise and move towards better-paid careers with more responsibility than with a bac+3. At Digital Campus, you will have the choice between several Master's programmes:
- Data Marketing Master's,
- Brand Content Master's,
- Digital Art Direction Master's,
- Lead UX Master's,
- Tech Lead Master's
If you stopped your BUT MMI after 2 years and therefore obtained an "intermediate qualification" DUT, you can still continue your studies and opt for a 3rd year of specialisation. At Digital Campus, for example, there is the intensive-track Bachelor's 3rd year, which allows you to obtain the multimedia project manager qualification in 1 year. A good option to avoid losing a year and to specialise even further in the digital sector.
Is the BUT MMI programme available as a work-study programme?
The BUT MMI is sometimes available as a work-study programme depending on the institution's policy. The work-study format allows students to combine periods of training at the IUT with periods in a company, which enables them to gain professional experience while continuing their studies.
What to do after a BUT MMI?
Over three years, the BUT MMI trains students to enable them to work in the field of digital communication and the internet. It is an operational diploma that gives them the opportunity to land a job easily, in a sector that is hiring. After these 3 years of study, the student will have several options:
- Continue their studies;
- Move towards working life.
It is also worth noting that even though, since the start of the 2021 academic year, the BUT has replaced the DUT with the aim of obtaining a bac+3 (instead of a bac+2 initially), it is entirely possible to stop at the end of the 2nd year and obtain an "intermediate qualification" to automatically be awarded a bac+2 DUT.
What are the career prospects after a BUT MMI or further studies post-BUT?
Depending on the path you choose during the BUT MMI, you will be able to move towards various professions such as communication officer, community manager, e-commerce coordinator, web copywriter, UX designer, web designer, web or mobile application developer, and so on.
If you opt for further studies after your BUT, you will have the opportunity to access positions with more responsibility.
For example, with the Digital Campus Master's programmes, you could become a
