On 4 and 5 December, 29 Pre-Master's students visited the Gilbert Dru middle school in Lyon 3rd arrondissement to introduce 150 sixth-grade students to coding.
Digital Campus Lyon is taking part for the 2nd year in the HOUR OF CODE initiative, an effort to promote greater diversity in the digital sector! #EngagedSchool
Across the world, during this first week of December, middle school students are guided by computing/web students to learn how to "code". It's entirely possible to become a "coder" or a "developer" if you put your mind to it. So girls and boys — it's the same fight!
No "job" is reserved for one group or the other.
Digital Campus students ran 6 one-hour sessions to introduce middle school students to coding.
Hour of Code is a fun, beginner-level, one-hour coding workshop built around the Minecraft game, using block-based programming (similar to Scratch). At the end of each workshop, the students were thrilled to receive their certificate. The initiative is coordinated in Lyon by the L Digital Foundation.
The reason for targeting middle school students is to break down, from an early age, the stereotypes that coding and tech are primarily male domains — and to inspire students, especially girls, to explore these fast-growing sectors and discover their vocation! As a reminder, today:
33% of employees in digital professions are women (Femmes @ Numérique study),
Digital employment in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes accounts for nearly 95,000 jobs (Pôle Emploi infographic) and 60% of companies struggle to recruit the right profiles (2nd EY/Digital League observatory report).
